I've now discovered the brightness keyboard hotkeys! So at least I don't have to fiddle around in settings if the screen goes dark. To work, I'm thinking that it would require hardware/firmware in the DISPLAY to support commands from the Mac. I also need to do a bit more detective work on the circumstances when it happens and will try unsetting Slightly Dim The Display on Battery Power to begin with, as the battery life is so good I don't think I really need this. At least I don't recall ever seeing an application or utility on the Mac that could do this. I even tried using the Shift, Control, Option & Command keys with F14 & F15. I'm not thinking of returning my Macbook at this point as I'm assuming it is far more likely to be a software issue that will eventually be fixed in an OS upgrade rather than a hardware problem. I have a Mac mini with Yosemite (10.10.2) & a 23' LG monitor. I have Automatically Adjust Brightness and True Tone enabled, as well as Slightly Dim The Display on Battery Power. I use Firefox as my browser and certainly for the two occasions today that was open. Once again I used Display in Settings to increase the brightness. It's just happened twice today whilst using it int the kitchen, for no apparent reason.
I managed to get Display up in the settings and with some difficulty used the slider increase the brightness. The first time I used it outside in daylight (not super bright sunshine) it dimmed to such an extent I could hardly see the screen content.
This should resolve the issue. It happened to me twice in the last couple of months when power crashed (or my UPS tripped).I've also seen this with my Macbook Air M1 running (now) 11.2.2. Resolution: (1) Unplug both monitors and the Mac Studio computer for at least five or more minutes. (2) Next, plug in ONLY the dim display and let it start. There is no on/off switch on the monitors, so plugging in the monitor will cause it to start and go dark when done. Three dots will be visible for a short time in the middle of the screen as it starts. (3) Next, plug in the other monitor and the computer unit. Start all three devices. It appears this will force the system to recognize the correct firmware for the monitor (or force a firmware update). Troubleshooting: Restarting the system does not fix the issue. When checking the About This Mac> System Report> Graphics/Displays, the dim monitor fails to show the Display Firmware Version. The good monitor shows Display Firmware Version: Version 15.5 (Build 19F77).
